PROPRIETORS: Vivienne Hayman & Ashley Sumner
Vivienne Hayman and Ashley Sumner are the duo behind the internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning restaurant, The Sugar Club.
The restaurant rose to fame in their native New Zealand in the late 80’s, before moving to Notting Hill in the mid-nineties and finally to London’s West Soho in 1998.
The restaurant was famous for its ground-breaking, eclectic menu and was credited with bringing fusion cuisine to Britain, winning Time Out’s ‘Best Modern British Restaurant’ award in 1996 and Time Out’s ‘Best London Restaurant’ Award in 1999.
In 2002 their chefs were experimenting with the technique of sous vide, providing Vivienne and Ashley with vacuum packed meals to enjoy at home. It was a concept that inspired them to create a 'ready meal revolution'.
In 2003, they opened The Grocer on Elgin, offering a delectable range of handmade, restaurant quality, ready meals free from artificial additives in their iconic, clear, vacuum-packed packaging. The Grocer on Elgin won Time Out’s ‘Best Traiteur Award’ in 2007 and continues today to wow customers with their delicious meals.
Vivienne and Ashley moved to Oxfordshire in 2015 to establish a market garden in order to grow their own produce, full of flavour and organic goodness for their kitchen. -
EXECUTIVE CHEF: Frederic Flamme
Frederic Flamme has been working with Vivienne and Ashley for over 25 years and is the culinary genius behind The Grocer's take home delights. Trained in France, he moved to London to join the team at The Sugar Club in 1996. His amazing sense of flavour and balance can be experienced in the award-winning ready meals he creates for The Grocer. Everything is prepared in his traditional restaurant kitchen, in small batches to ensure the highest quality.
Fred creates seasonal menus, sourcing the best ingredients. It is the quality of these ingredients that continues to impress.
